While a conventional air conditioner operates through a system of ducts where air is carried into the rest of the house, a ductless air conditioner — typically mounted high up on the wall — blows cold air directly into each room it’s intended for. Many homeowners wonder whether a ductless system is more difficult to repair than a regular unit, but the truth is that one isn’t necessarily worse than the other, just different. Here our HVAC installation experts at Custom Air Systems discuss the unique tune-up and repair needs of ductless systems.
Water leaks. An air handler is a component used to regulate and circulate air as part of an HVAC system. Each wall-mounted air handler unit shelters a string of connections, including a condensate line, power line and refrigerant line. The condensate line is tasked with funneling condensation away from the cooling process so it doesn’t end up in your living space. However, when moisture begins to accumulate behind the air handler, it’ll likely cause the air handler to loosen from the wall and fall off. Water leaks shouldn’t go unaddressed for a long, so make sure to have your system inspected regularly.
Refrigerant leaks. Refrigerant leaks are a common problem that can be detrimental to all air conditioning systems. However, since with a ductless system the refrigerant lines run throughout the house, the risk is even higher. However, this shouldn’t cause panic. Let a technician check and tune up your unit at least once a year before the blazing summer months arrive to minimize issues.
Broken air handlers. If an air handler is broken in one room, this means there will be no cooling in that space. However, there’s also an advantage to this. If a single air handler fails due to an isolated problem like a defective motor, the remaining air handlers installed in other rooms won’t be affected and will continue to function efficiently. You’ll still need to schedule a repair, of course, but you won’t have to worry about the rest of the house.
